Chapter 17

Paul was pacing the kitchen and Mark was trying to calm him down. They knew Josh had been found in Greece, and Jay was now with him in Arizona. Josh had left without so much as a word to anyone, and Jay had taken it hard. Within a week, Jay had broken up with Greg and he had taken off, too. The fallout had been catastrophic.

“Why doesn’t Josh come back, Mark?” Paul made another pass through the kitchen.

“Paul, he lost the love of his life. How would you feel if I had died?”

Paul grabbed him. “Don’t ever say that!” He hugged him close. “I can’t ever lose you, Mark. Not ever.”

“Then try to understand. Josh needs time. And I don’t think he wants to spend it with people constantly saying ‘sorry for your loss’ no matter how well-intentioned they are.”

Mark was the love of Paul’s life and if anything ever happened to him — he couldn’t even fathom the thought. They’d made it through their one marital crisis; he couldn’t face anything worse.

“I get it, babe.”

“Besides, Jason is with him. He’ll be okay.”

Within the half hour, Matt, Kyle, Alex and Dylan had shown up. Heath and Caleb were on their way with little Stefan, Damon and Tyler.

“Have you heard anything else?” Dylan took Mark’s hand.

“They’re all at the Grand Canyon, Dylan. The Youngbloods are out there.”

“They’ll bring them back, right?” Dylan looked hopeful.

“Aw, Dylan, I know you miss Jay.” Mark hugged him.

“I miss Tanner, too,” Dylan whispered.

“I know. I do, too.” Mark managed to smile. It had taken a long time for him not to cry at the mere mention of Tanner’s name. As it was, it still hurt.

The phone rang but Paul didn’t recognize the number. He picked it up and heard static and then a voice.

“Paul?”

“Josh!” Paul looked around at the whole group. “Are you okay? Is Jay okay?”

“We’re fine. Look, I’m sorry…”

“Don’t, Josh. You needed time.”

“How much time before Amber gives birth?”

“A few weeks, why?”

“I’ll be back for that, Paul. I hope you understand I can’t be there right now.”

Paul’s heart ached. “I know. I love you, Josh.”

“I love you, too. Say hi to everyone.”

Paul hung up the phone and hugged Mark close. “Don’t you ever leave me.”

“I won’t, baby.”

Paul pulled himself together and updated the group. “They’re doing fine. Josh is coming back before Amber gives birth.”

“What about Jay?” Dylan asked.

“I’m sure he’s coming home with Greg and Jason.” Paul mussed his hair.

Heath and Caleb finally arrived with Stefan, Damon and Tyler in tow and Mark and Paul filled them in. Heath cuddled little Stefan close to him and held Caleb’s hand.

“I can see why he doesn’t want to come back. He’s going to have to go into that house with all of Tanner’s things there. Oh God…” Heath closed his eyes and held Stefan tighter.

“I was there when your dad gave him Tanner’s wedding ring. I’ve never heard anyone so devastated.” Mark wiped his eyes. “It was awful.”

Damon and Tyler held hands and Damon noticed Tyler had started crying again.
